High flow oxygen therapy is a specialized type of treatment meant to ensure that patients are receiving a high amount of oxygen. This therapy can provide an additional treatment option to patients who may need more oxygen than what is possible in an oxygen cage without needing to use a ventilator.
Our high flow oxygen unit is not appropriate for all patient cases. Patients who are in respiratory distress from CHF or pneumonia, are on palliative care for pulmonary hypertension, or are recovering brachycephalic breeds after extubation may benefit greatly from high flow oxygen.
Cats, some small dog breeds, pneumothorax patients, or patients with possible tracheal trauma are not good candidates for high flow oxygen therapy at this time.
