Identifying Bloat and Torsion

At Urgent Pet Care Omaha, we provide emergency treatment for life-threatening conditions such as gastric torsion and bloating. Our clinics are open nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure your pet gets timely care.

What Is It?

Gastric torsion starts with bloating, causing the stomach to fill with gas and press on the diaphragm, making breathing difficult. This condition worsens if the stomach twists, leading to severe symptoms such as drooling, vomiting, distress, and collapse. Immediate veterinary attention is crucial.

Why Does It Happen?

Gastric torsion is more common in older dogs and large breeds with deep chests, such as Great Danes and German Shepherds. Factors such as genetics, eating habits, and exercise can contribute. Dogs with a family history of gastric torsion are at higher risk, and exercising right after eating can trigger bloating.

Veterinary Treatment for Pet Bloating

Diagnosis involves X-rays and urine tests. If your pet is in shock, stabilization comes first, followed by treating the bloating through intubation to relieve pressure. Surgery may be required to correct organ positioning and prevent recurrence by affixing the stomach.
