No one likes dealing with stings or bites, and your pet is no different. While most stings and bites are not dangerous, they can be uncomfortable or painful. Typically, pets recover quickly unless the bite is highly venomous or they have a severe allergic reaction.
As your emergency veterinarian in Omaha, we’re here to help you determine when your pet needs urgent care. Feel free to call us with any questions about your pet’s health!
Cats, being naturally cautious, are less frequently stung or bitten compared to dogs. Dogs, however, are more adventurous and often come into contact with insects and other animals, leading to stings and bites. At Urgent Pet Care Omaha, some of the most common stings and bites we see include: bee stings, spider bites, tick bites, and encounters with other animals.
Curious dogs often provoke wasps, bees, and other flying insects, resulting in stings, usually on the face. These stings typically cause welts that the dog may scratch or bite but usually heal on their own. However, if significant swelling occurs, it’s important to consult your vet.
While most spiders can’t penetrate your pet’s skin, some, such as the black widow, can be dangerous. If your pet has been bitten and shows signs of severe pain, muscle spasms, vomiting, excessive salivation, or trouble breathing, bring them to our emergency clinic immediately.
The most dangerous bites for pets often come from parasitic insects such as fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. These bites can transmit various diseases and parasites. Fleas can carry tapeworms and other illnesses, ticks can transmit Lyme disease, and mosquitoes can spread heartworms.
While your pet may not always have an allergic reaction to these bites, using preventative measures such as flea and tick treatments and heartworm medication is crucial for protecting your pet’s health.
If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening injury or illness, stop and call now.
