Dermatology at Our Urgent Pet Care in Papillion, NE

There are many different reasons why your dog may experience skin irritation. Here at Urgent Pet Care in Papillion, NE we want to help keep your pet's skin in good condition. Dermatology concerns can come from any number of sources.  You may notice your dog has an irritation if he or she is excessively pawing at an area, scratching, chewing, or licking.  Skin irritations can come from a simple scrape or a hot spot or can be a result of a larger medical concern.  Below, let's take a look at some of the more common signs associated with skin irritations.

Dog scratching his head

Hair Loss

Seeing your dog lose patches of fur can be concerning.  There are several reasons why your dog's fur may fall out.  One of the more common issues is Demodex mites.  This can be easily treated with regular medicated baths.  Hair loss can also be a result of a thyroid problem, adrenal disorder, or even Cushing's disease.  There are also different strains of bacteria that can attack your dog's skin and fur.  Talking to your vet is the best way to diagnose the cause for your dog's hair loss.  Often a simple culture from the affected area can determine the correct diagnosis.

Rashes

A rash on your dog is a skin irritation that pet owners commonly notice.  Rashes can come from a simple irritant or can be a bigger problem.  Depending on the age of your dog, he or she may be suffering from Impetigo.  This bacteria induced rash usually occurs in puppies or dogs up to one-year-old.  Heat rash can also appear as a rash on your dog, particularly on your dog's stomach and can be an indication that your dog is overheated.  Further, yeast infections often appear as a rash on your pet's skin and can become quite aggressive if left untreated.

Allergies

Just like humans, pets can have allergies caused by the environment or food. Seasonal allergies often make the feet or ears itchy.  Excessive scratching, chewing, and licking can lead to red spots, scrapes, or even bloody patches.  Because there is such a wide range of what could be causing skin allergies it is a good idea to talk to your vet if you suspect your dog is suffering.  Often some simple changes in diet or environment can help alleviate allergy symptoms.  Allergy medication can also be prescribed by your veterinarian.
